What is a tax return?

A tax return is a form (paper or online) on which you:
  • Report details of your taxable income and capital gains
  • Claim tax allowances and tax reliefs.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) may issue a tax return to you each tax year. The tax year runs from 6 April one year to 5 April the next. If you receive a tax return, you must complete it, by law.

HMRC uses the information on your tax return to work out your tax bill or whether you are due a tax refund.

Who must complete a tax return?

You must complete a tax return if you:

What are the deadlines to complete and submit a tax return?

The last tax year started on 6 April 2016 and ended on 5 April 2017. Register for Self Assessment if you’re self-employed or a sole trader, not self-employed, or registering a partner or partnership 5 October 2017

Paper tax returns : Midnight 31 October 2017
Online tax returns : Midnight 31 January 2018
Pay the tax you owe : Midnight 31 January 2018

What are the penalties?

You’ll receive a penalty if you miss the deadline for submitting your tax return or paying your bill. You’ll receive a penalty of £100 if your tax return is up to three months late. You’ll have to pay more if it’s later than three months, or if you pay your tax bill late.

Estimate your penalty for Self Assessment tax returns more than 3 months late, and late payments.

You can appeal against a penalty if you have a reasonable excuse.

Claiming tax relief

You may be able to claim tax relief if you have to use your own money for travel or things that you must buy for your business. You must have paid tax in the year you spent the money. How much you can claim depends on the rate you pay tax. For more information, check our Tax Rebate section.

By law, you must keep the records you need to fill in a complete and correct tax return. If your return is incomplete and you are then found to owe tax, you may also have to pay interest and a penalty.
